Top Ten Post-Breakup Anthems

For me, music is one of the best coping mechanisms on the planet. When I can’t quite express my emotions the way I would like to, there is always a song out there that captures my feelings perfectly.

Music is also one of many ways that I have overcome heartbreak. Sure I have my songs for when I’m down in the dumps and halfway through my second pint of Chunky Monkey. But when I am done moping, I switch gears and play the upbeat, empowering, certified bops that help me remember that I am still quite the badass and that I will get through it. Below, here are my top ten post-breakup songs that, in my experience, will pull me out of the deepest of funks:

10. Shake It Off-Mariah Carey

I don’t think this song got the credit it deserved, but this song uses biting one-liners set to a bouncy groove that promises to have your head nodding on beat and in agreement.

Iconic Line: See, I grabbed all my diamonds and clothes, just ask your momma she knows/You’re gonna miss me, baby/Hate to say I told you so

9. Roar-Katy Perry

This pop-infused breakdown of a woman finding her voice again after leaving her chump will have you ready to throw TF down!

Iconic Line: Now I’m floatin’ like a butterfly/Stinging like a bee, I earned my stripes/I went from zero, to my own hero

8. Thank U, Next-Arianna Grande

Even if you can’t stand him, Arianna sends a gentle reminder that he at least showed you that you were worth more, and for that you can be thankful while still choosing to move on.

Iconic Line: I’ve got so much love/Got so much patience/I’ve learned from the pain/I turned out amazing

7. Cry Me A River-Justin Timberlake

Yes, boys get their heart broken too! In any case, the lack of sympathy combined with the raw strength of this track will help steel you against his crocodile tears.

Iconic Line: Girl, I refuse/You must have me confused with some other guy/The bridges were burned/Now it’s your turn, to cry

6. Truth Hurts-Lizzo

This sleeper hit shares the gospel about how your guy missed out on a real winner, and encourages you to twerk your way to the next chapter of your love life.

Iconic Line: I put the “sing” in single/Ain’t worried ’bout a ring on my finger/So you can tell your friends: Shoot your shot/When you see ’em/It’s OK, he already in my DMs

5. Hit The Freeway-Toni Braxton

Again, this is another R&B banger that didn’t get the flowers it deserved! Braxton’s sultry vocals and the story of a ex who just doesn’t get the picture alongside a thumping hip-hop rhythm (courtesy of Pharrell) is a sure fire way to kick him to the curb.

Iconic Line: Baby tell me what I should feel/Instead of being your regret/Maybe some day in your dreams, my love/You could say, “Damn, it’s you again”

4. Pick Up Your Feelings-Jazmine Sullivan

I’m already calling this THE breakup song of 2021. The incomparable Ms. Sullivan is not playing games with these vocals or the schmuck who dared to break her heart.

Iconic Line: You’re off the lease, run me my keys/No more poppin’ up to hit it, yeah/I ain’t even got the miles to trip on you

3. Best Thing I Never Had-Beyoncé

This bass-driven ballad drives home the point that he actually did you a favor and that he’ll forever kick himself for losing what could have been the best part of his future. Oh well, his loss!

Iconic Line: Thank God you blew it/I thank God I dodged the bullet/I’m so over you/So baby good lookin’ out

2. It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay-Whitney Houston

Ah, Queen Whitney! Take a clue from her super-sleuth skills and ensure the door hits him on the ass on the way out as you play this danceable exit song.

Iconic Line: Cause I’ve been through all this before/That’s why you have to leave/So don’t turn around to see my face/There’s no more tears left here for you to see

  1. I Will Survive-Gloria Gaynor

Naturally, this disco classic will forever be the ultimate post-breakup anthem! Gaynor’s soaring vocals coupled with a beautiful violin track will always remind you that even if he tries to sucker you back into a second round of foolishness, you will get past this and you have a whole life to live without him, and with the true love of your life: YOU!

Iconic Line: And you see me/Somebody new/I’m not that chained-up little person still in love with you/And so you felt like dropping in and just expect me to be free/Well, now I’m saving all my lovin’ for someone who’s loving me
